Came across this article from my friend, Juanita Ecker, hope you enjoy.

During last week’s NFL draft, my husband kept commenting that one prospect was not picked for any of the teams. I asked him about the player’s attitude and he explained that he has a bad attitude on the field as well as off it. As a result, teams considered him a bad seed and were reluctant to take him on.

My brother-in-law happens to be a coach and added that when companies want to hire his athletes, they never ask how many goals a player scored. They ask what his attitude was like. Your attitude is something that will carry over, long after you leave sports.

People in just about every field—sports, marketing, tech—think that having the necessary skills is enough to succeed. What they’re forgetting is the role that someone’s persona and character plays in their career. Sure, you can code, but if you’re complaining the whole time, who wants to work with you? Never volunteering for projects, exhibiting anti-social behavior, picking fights, acting defeatist, or failing to be a team player are negative traits that all work against you, regardless of your skills.

Of course there are exceptions. Steve Jobs famously put off coworkers because of his objection to wearing deodorant and his unruly attitude. But he was Steve Jobs. For the rest of us, having a bad attitude just won’t cut it.

Sometimes we may not realize that our attitude is an issue until we get feedback from others. If you sense that your complaining is rubbing others the wrong way (and it probably is), ask a valued colleague for constructive tips on lightening the mood. Adopting a more pleasant attitude will reduce office tension and help you get through the day.
