The primary seat of insanity generally is in the region of  the stomach and intestines

Phillipe Pinel – Father of modern Psychiatry (1745-1828)

In the last 20 years autism and an assorted range of mental health isues have begun to be diagnosed and labelled. Like most things in reductionist science each new discovery is seperated labelled and treated without any understanding of the interconnectedness of life.

Research has made great strides into the connection between the digestive system and the brain. Many of the chemicals used in the brain are created in the digestive system.

Autism,  Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD/ADD, asthma, eczema, allergies, dysparia or dsylexia have all been implicated in digestive imbalances. The current reductionist approach to health is slowly being replaced by a wholistic, interconnected view. Many parents and medical people with children affected by autism and the other brain symptoms are leading the way to finding how all the dots join together and form a fuller picture.

It is like James Rickard’s concept of  Complex Theory, in which we know there is a problem but have to throw a very big net over all the potential influencing factors.

The world is changing and for the carers of children with behavioural conditions necessary is truly the mother of all invention. Medicine has no answers, parents are being forced to seek there own solutions. Because these conditions have no gender or social barriers it is making many from the world of old science to look more wholistically at the issues being presented. On example is Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride and her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome. The book takes the journey into the correlation between what is going on in the digestive system and it’s affect on the brain.

It has puzzled me for some time why the connection is not more obvious. While writing Kissing the Black Dog it became very clear that there are a lot of physical factors that govern how well the brain works. It continues to surprise me that some still treat the brain as if it somehow seperated from the body.

There seems a very strong connection between what i refer to as the oxgen-pH-water axis. All three play into causing imbalances within the body especially the digestive system.

The above conditions for children can as they grow develop into schizophrenia, depression, eating disorders, manic depression, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Getting back to understanding the interplay between the basics, oxygen absorption and utilisation, a ph balance within the body and the absorption and distribution of living water is imperative.
